STRATIGRAPHIC ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION AND RESTORATION WORKS MONUMENT VIA CAPITELLI
TRIESTE

In Trieste, in the area of via dei Capitelli, after the preparation of the base of a crane, in 2000 a Roman monument was found.

From 2002 to 2004 the sector of the old city was archaeologically investigated, documenting its life phases from the 1st century BC. A.D. in the mid-twentieth century, when the neighborhood was abandoned.

The excavation of the upper terrace reached the late and post-ancient levels, while in the lower part the investigation was concentrated in the area in front of the monument.

The reinforced concrete structures built to contain the land towards via dei Capitelli also allowed the uncovering and restoration of a section of the late antique walls and the Roman road that connected the top of the hill of San Giusto to the coast.
